A wholehearted team effort at Victoria Station from organisers Vigilance Properties and its cohort of committed supporters saw previous fundraising efforts surpassed in raising £50,342 for The Royal British Legion's London Poppy Day this Thursday 30th October 2014.
Alongside the ever supportive staff of London's Victoria Station, a benevolent Army of Vigilance staff, supporters and fundraising friends stood shoulder to shoulder with a massed contingent of serving soldiers, sailors and airmen both past and present to smash the previous year's total.
Over 2,500 Armed Forces volunteers contribute to London Poppy Day, creating an immensely special atmosphere at over 60 separate sites around the capital. Running in this Great War anniversary year, 2014's appeal generated an additional 25% on the 2013 total with £1,250,000 raised in the day across London.
Organising station commander and Vigilance managing director Chris Hartley said: "This year's effort was spectacular, raising a very special total that will be hard to surpass. Our fundraising efforts were helped by the moving Remembrance display of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, which drew large crowds who were pleased to meet our poppy collectors.
"During the day Victoria Station was staffed by a team of 100 or more volunteer fundraisers at any one time, which is staggering. To raise in excess of £50,000 in a day is a very special achievement and testament to the tremendous generosity and support for the Appeal by Victoria's commuters and rail travellers. I would like to thank them."
Russel Thompson OBE, director of National Events & Fundraising for the Royal British Legion said:
"London Poppy Day is a chance to stand shoulder to shoulder with those who serve. Every year we have more than doubled the amount raised on the day. Thank you to Vigilance Properties Ltd for their support in helping us to make this happen."
