Chiuribote School Reconstruction Project

Building on its long term partnership agreement with the Gurkha Welfare Trust Vigilance is pleased to announce the launch of its Siddartha School Chiuribote project in Western Nepal.

Reconstruct

Speaking from the Disraeli Room of the Carlton Club in central London Vigilance operations director Laxman Pun, supported by the company directors, presented his vision of a reconstructed school in his home village of Chiuribote in the Kali Gandaki valley.

Currently Crumbling

The Siddartha School has operated in its current state since the 1950s and pupils and staff are as involved in mantaining the crumbling structure as in learning from the scant resources and funding accessible from central government. Largely a subsistence farming community, teachers wages are paid via the expatriot Gurkha diaspora.

Enhanced Facilities

Vigilance proposes to build a new two storey earthquake resistant structure on school land, with enhanced educational facilities in th form of classroom materials, a library and IT access. The existing school structure will be made structurally safe, refurbished and repurposed as a community centre, from where distance medicine can be practised. Building is very seasonal in Nepal, but target completion is 2016-17.

Full Feasability

Following a full feasability study conducted by engineers and experts from the GWT the viability of the school's reconstruction and sustainability of the project has been confirmed. Vigilance has therefore committed to a 24-month project fundraising timeframe with a target of £45,000 to project completion.
